Letโ€™s go ahead and get personal on this one, which is always fun. I often find myself building upon things Iโ€™ve previously discussed or written. I feel like anything worth sharing is personal in some way and I try to avoid publishing anything that I wouldnโ€™t say in person. Itโ€™s nice that the holidays always bring about a certain amount of reflection. And in that tradition, let me reflect on what Christmas means to me.

![St. Nicholas](/img/st-nicholas.jpg)
<div style={{display: 'flex', justifyContent:'center', alignItems:'center', fontSize:'small', marginBottom:'20px'}}>Started working on this ๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿผ portrait of Saint Nicholas and I'll have to finish over the holidays. The hand gesture is ->[important](https://sanmiguelicons.com/painting-hands-in-iconography/)</div>

Letโ€™s get right to the heart of the matter. Iโ€™m a Christian who, admittedly and willfully eschews some of the literal interpretations of the Old Testament including the core tenets from God in Exodus[^1]. Iโ€˜ve found myself unable to reconcile some of them and generally like to point out the literal fallacies alongside not trimming your beard or wearing multiple fabrics. I could dig deep into theological debate, but I wouldnโ€™t find myself on the same side of the podium as the presuppositional apologetics or the modern, while mostly unaware, acolytes thereof who largely compose the new evangelicals. Iโ€™ll just say that I admittedly find myself moved by the spirit not just as intellectual exercise and there I find faith. I recently read a submitted essay in an email from my church about Advent which hit the spot.

> Advent, to me, is a season of hopeful anticipation and reflection. Itโ€™s a time when I take a step back from the busy pace of life to focus on inner preparationโ€”welcoming peace, love, and joy into my heart. Each candle on the Advent wreath symbolizes something I strive to embody more deeply, from hope and joy to love and peace. Lighting each one is a gentle reminder to let go of distractions and center myself, embracing this season with gratitude and renewed faith.

I just like the symbolism and meaning. Why yes I would like to welcome peace, love, and joy into my heart but first I gotta avoid getting wrapped up in the general malaise that is the panic to make sure weโ€™ve got all the holiday plans in order. I find the conspicuous consumption this time of year obnoxious and of course Iโ€™m certainly guilty of buying shit I donโ€™t need and overeating. I just find a lot of the contemporary messaging conflicting so I think that I mostly still try to frame it all inside of my pleasant memories โ€” family gatherings, travel, pajama-laden days of toys, and food on call. My family would usually do the adjourning Sunday service but not nearly as much as egg nog on Christmas eve. I wasnโ€™t introduced to the ritual of the midnight mass until later in life and I now will duck out of egg nog early to make it even if I havenโ€™t seen the inside of a church for months.

There isnโ€™t any consensus on eschatology[^2] amongst any religion or divisions thereof, although they seem to strive for and proclaim it so. And so I also find myself at peace with Yule[^3], Hanukkah, Sol Invectus[^4], and Bodhi[^5] which revolve around the darkest days of the year at winter solstice. The symbolism in each of them can be just important to me as a midnight service. Since I donโ€™t know of any group of locals people organizing worship in a heated location, I try to find my own little traditions to remind me without the cynicism of lit-up plastic baby Jesusโ€™ ( how do I pluralize Jesus ) along the country roadsides.

I think what most people really value are the traditions themselves and what weโ€™re really celebrating is the cyclical nature of life. Itโ€™s why folks dig out the old recipes and pull down the same decor from the attic. I meanโ€ฆ for a child was born. We always put up all of our old family ornaments on our tree the day after Thanksgiving. Every time I pull one out of the box, Iโ€™m immediately reminded of when I was staring at it on a tree at eye level, under four feet tall. Thatโ€™s literally all it takes for me to be reminded.

I try not to get tangled up in any of the other nonsense. I didnโ€™t make any shopping lists this year unless I count the time spent looking for a new toilet for our renovation. We always give the same gifts to everyone and this year weโ€™re back to food baskets because theyโ€™re always a hit and perfectly symbolic of us saying โ€˜here, we hope you can survive the winter too โ€™. We pack em with our favorite things and we go out of our way to try to visit everyone weโ€™re able which kinda makes me feel like Santa Claus.

Iโ€˜m sure like everyone else, I dig out my favorite Christmas movies and music too. I like the genre. I've had an ongoing text thread going about films and listed comedies like _Mixed Nuts_, _Trading Places_, and _Planes Trains & Automobiles_ as my favorites. My buddy insisted we watch Kirk Cameronโ€™s _Saving Christmas_[^6].

>I'm 100% serious about the Kirk Cameron movie. It's such a wonderfully weird intersection of consumerism, evangelism and delusion. It's genuinely bizarre.  I honestly dislike all Christmas movies but I find this one entertaining

So I watched it. And while itโ€™s a whole essay in itself, the pressing synopsis is that Jesus is the reason. Meanwhile non-Christians are still having quite a time. In China, where about 7% are Christian, itโ€™s all about apple giving[^7]. Christmas remains a time to spend with friends and family as the vast majority of the secular world also celebrates the season in some way or another. And it's not some sort of affront as Mr. Cameron teaches. Despite the kitsch, I loved the message and Kirk knew he couldn't blow it on facts given that he was inspired enough to share his filmmaking acuity.

Since 85% of non-Christians celebrate Christmas[^8], itโ€™s as much a cultural holiday as a religious one. The 70% of Americanโ€™s who are Christian seem to go all in on some of the least religious parts. I certainly canโ€™t can blame themโ€ฆ itโ€™s gotta be more fun than celebrating Saint Nicholasโ€™ miracle of resurrecting pickled children[^9]. And since Jesusโ€™ first miracle was turning water into wine, so I couldn't recommend refraining. Persecution is not something anyone should espouse and even the most staunch atheists like Nietzsche and Marx thought it beneficial that folks celebrate on[^10].

Burl Ives might have something to say about this given his close association with the holiday and communism[^11]. For me, mostly because of my age, Ivesโ€™ narration of _Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer_ embodies the secular holiday. Aside from the fact that it was commissioned by Macyโ€™s, it was written by a non-christian who celebrated contemporary humanism. _A Christmas Carol_ was based on Dickensโ€™ political pamphlet _An Appeal to the People of England, on behalf of the Poor Man's Child_[^12]. He thought it a more effective approach to reform the working conditions of 1843 England. _Itโ€™s a Wonderful Life_ is based on it. I watched a Simpsons Christmas special recently where a hypnotist convinces Homer that he is Santa Clause which appears to be directly based on _Miracle on 34th Street_. Springfield believing Homer is Santa Clause puts everyone in the spirit and itโ€™s a direct take on the central theme of a lot of popular Christmas films โ€” faith is about belief.

The legal case for Santa Clause in _Miracle on 34th Street_ was altered between the 1947 and 1994 versions[^13]. The latter uses โ€˜In God We Trustโ€™ on a dollar bill to argue that if US Treasury can make a declaration of faith without physical evidence, then by a similar act of faith, we can declare that Santa Claus exist. And therein lies, what I believe and based on its popularity, is at the heart of the magic of Christmas of what most folks really cherish.

I think twelve days of celebration should happen several more times during the year[^14]. The magic is in the seasons and stories themselves. Magic is from magi, the fellas bearing gifts on the twelfth night and not a gateway drug to demonic possession[^15]. I donโ€™t need to celebrate the circumcision instead of the new year[^16]. And despite the legacy of the council of Nicaea[^17], what weโ€™re also celebrating throughout the holiday is life itself. Epiphany[^18] is supernatural and itโ€™s the perfect time to reflect and remember. And I **believe** that it should be a joyous occasion for everyone.

I have a couple favorite Christmas songs. The first isnโ€™t exactly obvious as a Christmas tune. About 14 years ago I posted a version of this song[^19] on social media during the holidays, but I donโ€™t think anyone picked up on it. Bob Dylan wrote and recorded _Ring Them Bells_[^20] in New Orleans in 1989[^21]. Itโ€™s largely based on the Gospel of Matthew which begins with the birth of Christ and so for me, itโ€™s very much a Christmas tune. Dylan wrote that he struggled with the last line regarding the ambiguity of right and wrong. He said โ€œI donโ€™t adhere to rabbis, preachers, evangelists, all of that. Iโ€™ve learned more from the songs than Iโ€™ve learned from any of this kind of entity. The songs are my lexicon. I believe in the songsโ€. Along the lines of the religious iconography, Itโ€™s an ageless call bringing folks together to uplift the world along the lines of every spiritual hymn ever written for Christmas.

My other favorite is Lou Rawls singing _Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas_[^22]. Although some may go by some more croonyโ€™er versions by Bing or Frank, I think Lou does it classier and the big band sound has more punch. Itโ€™s so declarative โ€” not an โ€œI hopeโ€ or โ€˜Iโ€™m dreamingโ€™ and the second line insist that our hearts are good.

>Have yourself a merry little Christmas

And If I could put just one wish on everyoneโ€™s list along the usual suspects of charity, kindness, and peace and it'd go something like this. My wish to you other folks out there is to just make an effort to focus on the small things that bring you and others around you joy. Peace in our own hearts is how we find goodwill. Go forth, have some nuts, drink some egg nog, buy some stuff, share some gifts, and most importantly just give it your best effort to be merry this Christmas.

> Let your heart be light,
David

---

Today I learned that the Treasury Yield is back up to 4.684%. Meanwhile the market exuberance got a little slap because the quantum computing folks say maybe twenty years away from some practical application.

<!-- truncate -->

This got me to thinking about attention alongside a decent conversation with the better half this morning about it. I'm a bit like my dog and when the ball is bouncing out in front of me, I chase. And I also think the majority of folks share this lovely trait. As I've been learning more about economics and markets, I've taken noticed the almost immediate effects of information and attention.

The term attention economy was coined in the late 1960s characterizing the problem of information overload as an economic one[^1]. Only a very small fraction ( < .5% ) of the generated data is analyzed at all[^2] and thus the rise of big data AI to help digest it all. The strategic capture and analysis of private attention is a profitable business model and attention is the new currency.

I like to look at other peoples phones and computers not because I'm nosy, but because I honestly like to investigate how they use those tools. I had a chance over the holiday to look at about six or seven other phones of friends and relatives. The interesting part to me is how everyone uses the tools so differently prioritizing this or that for their screen time. My main takeaway from my nosy phone habit is that most folks are all over the place.

I think it's really hard for folks to maintain focus on long term goals. It seems that most people spend the majority of time trying to manage their attention day to day and meet very short term goals. Did I respond to that voicemail or email, did I pack my kids bag, or I need to pick up milk from the grocery? Add in a litany of various other attention grabbers and it becomes a juggling act to pull it all off leaving very little time to focus on anything outside of our immediate attention.

Since I'm very protective of my attention, I try my best not to allow any unwanted distractions and I do so while juggling an assortment of group communications[^3]. I think this is primarily to balance out my wandering mind. As is usually the case this time of year, I start by setting some long term goals and I suppose that's the real reason I started writing this post. So let's get on with it and write em down for posterity.

#### My 2025 Goals

- hit my ideal weight of 173 which is 18lbs down from where I was this morning.
  - 1lb a week for five months.
  - more holistic low impact exercise routine
    - less tennis and more hiking, biking, walking, & swimming
    - walk the golf course
  - track my food intake and activity
    - cronometer and Apple health/watch
- make up my financial goals this year
  - need an additional $500,000 for retirement
    - stashing 50k per year for 10yrs
  - work smarter, not harder
    - better contract negotiations and time management
  - actively learn and monitor investment accounts
  - go lean on expenses - cook, recycle clothes, less trips
- work toward being the Renaissance man I like to imagine myself in retirement
  - start practicing painting/drawing again
    - set up permanent studio space
    - digital drawing during downtime.
  - start practicing piano
    - figure out a good learning method
  - start re-learning woodworking
    - acquire tools and execute projects
  - learn to write screenplays & attempt to write humor

I'm pretty determined ( check back with me in a couple months ) that I'm not going to let sloppy attention get in the way. And I should note that I spent an unsuccessful twenty minutes this morning looking for the pencil I misplaced because I don't like to travel with it attached to the iPad. I just recently wrote that during the last year I switched from self-deprecation to self-determination[^4] so I'm just gonna try and live up to it.

Today I learned that other people want to do my work for me.

<!-- truncate -->

I received a curious email this morning. And no, it wasn't a fake Paypal notice or a request to help pay for a portion of a foreign inheritance[^1]. It's not a scam hustle, but it's definitely a hustle. I have an email addresses that I use publicly and I have quite a number of public profiles online so it's not uncommon for me to occasionally receive unsolicited offers. Even outside of the more common scam attempts which are mostly caught by spam filters these days, I've received some rather odd emails inviting me to build, advise, partner, invest, collaborate, inflate, deflate, attack, defend, or recommend.

I'll include the full text of the email below and obscure some of the details to protect the sender. Why would I protect the sender? First off, he or sheโ€ฆ I say that like I don't know, but I did my own recon. They're likely a somewhat talented developer I wouldn't want to tick them off just for fear of retribution, and secondly โ€” Don't hate the player, hate the game[^2]. I'm always very sympathetic to folks out there just trying to make it happen.

I remember when I was a kid in 1987 when the McDonald's Monopoly games first came out. My dad was doing some sort of promotion for it on the radio and had folks calling in to claim prizes base on the scratch off pieces they had. I thought to myself, rather innocently, I'll just ask for the phone numbers of these other folks who have the matching pieces and we can just split the prizes. I was too naive to understand that all other pieces I was missing were exactly the one's others were missing and were how the promotion actually regulated the awards. It didn't take me long to figure it out and I learned years later that the company handling the entire contest had a chief of security, a former police officer working with organized criminals, who stole all of the winning pieces. [^3] [^4]

I've reversed engineered scams before and at the end of the line is sometimes a some poor fella, gal, fella acting like a gal, or vice versa usually in an impoverished area of the world just trying to make an easy buck. I'm a big fan of the hack the hacker videos and I think I mighta enjoyed computer forensics. I remember the last one I did for a friend who got hustled on Facebook marketplace for some auto parts. I found the kid in Egypt and by the time I had searched through all of his photos I had small amount of empathy toward the little criminal with less respect for my friend who thought he could actually buy some vintage Porsche parts at such a steep discount. It's usually just the poor preying on the greedy.

In this case, I'm not going to respond. I value personal integrity above all else. But the idea isn't too shabby[^5]. It's not like I haven't sometimes outsourced my work or done work for others without credit. Isn't that how all business are organized. I hired a contractor recently to work on our house and I didn't think he'd be doing the labor. And in this case, the targets would be large companies that have been built on the back of large pools of labor. If we could handle the work of three different jobs at the same time, what would it matter to the companies. I could use an additional 10k a month. There might even be other developers using my resume and likeness elsewhere anyway trying to get jobs.

Poor fella doesn't realize that even if we'd pulled down half a million, credit agencies report your employers and eventually we'd get caught up in a our own web trying to juggle simultaneous meetings or explain work I didn't actually do. I'm not even doing a chunk of the work anymore with the help of AI. In the end, it's not about the money. Just ask anyone who has a stash. It's about being happy and that revolves around your personal worth. In this case, I'm finding mine in my ability to more quickly realize mistakes I might have made when I was more naive. And the one key element the proposal really failed to understand is that I actually like doing the more challenging work myself. And even though I've hired a contractor, I was pricing new table saws yesterday.

>Dear David,

>I hope this letter finds you well. My name is ???????, and I am a senior full-stack developer based in ???????. I recently came across your profile on ?????? and wanted to propose a potential collaboration that could be mutually beneficial.

>Currently, I am not engaged in any projects requiring immediate collaboration. However, I believe that forming a partnership with you could open doors to lucrative opportunities. Our collaboration could take the form of technical cooperation, where we share responsibilities, or non-technical support, including entrepreneurial advice and guidance.

>Here is the framework I have in mind for our collaboration:

>1. Job Applications

>I can assist in crafting a resume for you that reflects extensive full-stack development experience, effectively showcasing approximately a decade of expertise. This would help attract the attention of recruiters. On your behalf, I would apply to 100โ€“200 senior software engineering positions daily, focusing on well-paying U.S.-based roles, particularly those where time zone differences may work in your favor.

>2. Interview Assistance

> - For initial and screening interviews, you could manage these stages or request my assistance if necessary.
> - During technical interviews, I would support you through remote tools like AnyDesk or TeamViewer, providing real-time solutions to ensure precise and confident responses.
> - For final interviews, your familiarity with American culture and native English proficiency would be an asset, but I would remain available to offer guidance and preparation as needed.

> 3. Collaboration After Hiring
> Once hired, we could establish a work arrangement as follows:

> - You would handle daily scrum meetings and team communications. In situations where cameras are not required during meetings, I could attend on your behalf.
> - I would manage day-to-day technical tasks, ensuring all company requirements are seamlessly fulfilled without affecting your reputation or existing commitments.
> - Together, we could potentially manage multiple roles (3โ€“4) simultaneously under this arrangement.

> 4. Compensation and Payment Terms
Salary payments from the company would be deposited directly into your account. Based on our agreement, we would split the earnings proportionately. You would retain 30-40% of the post-tax amount, depending on the salary, while I would receive the remainder.

> Summary
> In essence, I would take responsibility for the technical aspects of the work, including daily tasks and technical support during interviews. Your role would focus on communication and cultural elements, leveraging your English proficiency to navigate the hiring process and team dynamics.

> This arrangement has the potential to generate earnings exceeding $10,000 per month, assuming our collaboration is successful.

> I understand this proposal is unconventional, but I see it as a creative and strategic way to combine our strengths and achieve significant opportunities. If this idea interests you, please let me know, and we can arrange a call to discuss it further.

> Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

>Best regards,
>?????? ????????
